2006 Update -- When we first posted this web page about the fun we had building our Chuppah during the Winter of 1999-2000, we had weren't expecting all of the great feedback and questions that we would receive in the years to come. When our son was born in 2003, we changed our web site from a wedding site to a baby photo site and had taken this page down. Since we continue to get requests for information and pictures of our Chuppah, we are happy to post it back to where it originally was. We hope you enjoy sharing in our experience. We welcome questions and comments. And if you choose to build your own Chuppah for your wedding, we'd love to hear about it and see some pictures.

Our Chuppah

The Chuppah, or bridal canopy, is a symbol of a new couple's first home. The sides are open to remind us of the tent of Abraham and Sarah, which had doors on every side to welcome visitors. Our Chuppah has special significance to us because we designed and built this symbol of our first home ourselves. Now that it has fulfilled its traditional use on our wedding day, we will incorporate the Chuppah into the garden at our new home

It all started from this sketch, made from ideas we saw in magazines and discussions of what we envisioned.

First, we created a "blueprint" to create the structure.

Next, we built the top frame that held it all together.

Lots of painting...
